NORTHERN MARIANAS
The Northern Marianas are situated at 15 degrees 8'North and 145 degrees 43' East about 200km Northeast of Guam. They consist of the three main islands Saipan (with the capital Susupe), Rota and Tinian which are all of volcanic origin. The climate is tropical wet and hot, the temperatures fluctuate between 22 and 28 degrees centigrade throughout the year and the raining period is between July and September.
The Portuguese sailor Fernao de Magalhaes (aka Magellan when serving for the Spanish) discovered this island group in 1520/1521. He called them Islas de Ladones (in English: Thieves Island). This unattractive name is based on the fact that many things vanished from the ships while they traded with locals from the island. After the islands were handed over to Spain in the 17th century the island group was named after Queen Maria Ana.
During WW1 German soldiers built a lighthouse and a church with the ruins still being visited. More than 70.000 US Marines landed on the islands in June 1944 during WW2. Only a few weeks later the Japanese commanders Nagumo and Saito committed Harakiri after losing a battle on July 9, 1944. Only 2.000 of 32.000 Japanese soldiers survived! The Japanese propaganda was cause for several thousand inhabitants to jump off the 'suicidal cliff' 300m a.s.l. Today the Marianas belong to the US Commonwealth Territories and the residents are US citizens with no right to vote.
The main island Saipan has the most beautiful sand beaches thus making the tourism the most important source of income avant selling kopra or fishing.
