ISLAS SACRIFICIOS
The island group Islas Scarificios is situated at 19°12'North and 96°05'West in the Mexican Gulf off the coast of Veracruz. It consists of the islands, reefs and rocks Arrecife Anegada, Isla de la Adentro, Arrecife Blanquilla, Arrecife Pajaros, Arrecife de la Gallega, Arrecife Galleguilla, Isla Verde and Isla Hormos. The original Isla de Scrificios is a small sandbank with a lighthouse and a base of the coastguard.
This is said to be the island on which Hernando Cortes landed in 1519 before he started for Technochtitlan. This are belonged to the empire of Montezuma. They found stone altars on which humans were sacrificed only a short time before they landed on the island. That is where the name Isla de Sacrificios comes from.
Amateur radio: This island belongs to Mexico, prefix XE. The first activity was by XF2NVA on June 6-8, 1997 (HAM-EA-Info DX) while most sources say the first DXpedition to this island was done by Jose Levy, CE1J, as XF2UQZ from Oct 11-13, 2000.
