HOPEN ISLAND
Hopen (76° 47' N and 23° 46' E) is an island situated in the Barents Sea 185 km East of Spitsbergen (Svalbard) belonging to Norway. The island is 33km long and 2km wide and the highest mountain is the "Iversenfjellet" (370m). The mountain sides are very steep. Vegetation is very poor, mainly moss. The weather is very bad including considerable fog and rain. Hopen is surrounded by ice from November until July. During this time polar bears and arctic foxes often visit Hopen. In 1976 a total protection was adopted, in 1996 more than 400 bears were observed on the island!
Different stories are told about its discovery, most likely was the English whaling skipper Thomas Marmaduke of Hull who first saw the island in 1613 and named this island after his vessel "Hopewell". In WW2 the German army established the metorological station Husdalen which is used by Norway today
